World's First AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park
Leaders from 27 countries and top AI companies, including Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, convened at Bletchley Park for the first-ever AI Safety Summit. While there was no shared global agreement on AI regulations, it marked a significant step towards international collaboration, with the "Bletchley Declaration" signed by 28 countries, acknowledging the risks AI poses and the responsibility to ensure its safe use. Discussions revolved around AI risks, near-term and long-term, and the debate between open-source and closed-source AI research.

Elon Musk Unveils Grok: A New Challenger in the AI Chatbot Arena
xAI recently announced Grok, an AI model inspired by the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, designed to offer witty responses and provide real-time knowledge through the X platform. It's still in early beta but showcases promising improvements in reasoning and coding capabilities, surpassing benchmarks of other language models within its class (ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1). The article details xAI's mission in building Grok-1, the engine behind Grok, their research directions, the technology stack used for its development, and offers a chance for limited early access in the United States for user feedback and improvement.

Dario Amodei’s prepared remarks from the AI Safety Summit on Anthropic’s Responsible Scaling Policy – Antropic
“The most important thing to understand about AI is how quickly it is moving. A few years ago, AI systems could barely string together a coherent sentence. Today they can pass medical exams, write poetry, and tell jokes. This rapid progress is ultimately driven by the amount of available computation, which is growing by 8x per year and is unlikely to slow down in the next few years”
Representation Engineering: A Top-Down Approach To AI Transparency
“We identify and characterize the emerging area of representation engineering (RepE), an approach to enhancing the transparency of AI systems that draws on insights from cognitive neuroscience. RepE places representations, rather than neurons or circuits, at the center of analysis, equipping us with novel methods for monitoring and manipulating high-level cognitive phenomena in deep neural networks (DNNs). We provide baselines and an initial analysis of RepE techniques, showing that they offer simple yet effective solutions for improving our understanding and control of large language models. We showcase how these methods can provide traction on a wide range of safety-relevant problems, including honesty, harmlessness, power-seeking, and more, demonstrating the promise of top-down transparency research. We hope that this work catalyzes further exploration of RepE and fosters advancements in the transparency and safety of AI systems.”
